I had one of my Hens wander into my neighbor's yard where it was attacked by one of her hybrid Wolves. She called and had set it out behind her yard assuming it was dead. When I went out it was still lying there and appeared to be dead. Suddenly it got up and ran to the back of our yard. I retrieved it and we brought it in. The vet who is not familiar with chickens gave us an antibiotic called Daytril. Oral and we gave it to her. We cleaned here wounds out with a wound care product from the feed-store.

She is doing okay right now. She had several puncture wounds and some skin trauma as well. Should we use neosporin or another topical antibiotic in addition?

My wife is concerned that her bladder may have been punctured since her undercarriage seemed to be loaded with a clear liquid. Maybe urine, maybe discharge from her wounds?

Any information is greatly appreciated :)

Is it daytril or Baytril that your vet gave you?

I've used Baytril on the hens that I used to have, and on the Hawks that I rehabbed........it's an excellent med. Your vet made a good call.

As for the wounds, I had one hen try to clean antibiotic ointment off of herself, get into her nares and nearly suffocate. If you use it, it'd make sure that it is rubbed in thoroughly.

As for the clear liquid, it could be urine, but I've also seen a hens wounds "sweat" like that. It could be just body fluid. So dont give up on her, yet.

Keep her warm and dry, and quiet. Make sure that she has plenty of cool fresh water (refresh it several times a day).

Try to keep the wounds as clean as you can, but there is a fine line between keeping wounds clean and stressing out your hen. If she is a calm hen, you shouldnt have any problem, but a high strung hen could die of the stress. You'll have to find a happy median.

Good luck with her!

Golden Feather,

Thanks for advice. Unfortunately her internal injuries were too much. She passed away about 2:30 this morning. She was sleeping on my wife's chest throughout the night.
