Yesterday I noticed that one of my young hens was limping. I brought her inside and let her rest for a while. When I put her back outside she seemed to be doing better. This morning she is back to limping and not putting weight on the left foot. I don’t notice any serious injuries when I look at her foot, although her back toe looks really swollen around the nail. I’m thinking maybe something under the skin is irritating her but I don’t know for sure. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Side note, her spur bud on the foot that is bothering her seems extra large. Is this normal?

Same bird that you posted about earlier this month or a different one?https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/does-this-look-like-bumble-foot.1562150/#post-26511446

I'd try soaking the foot, remove the debris from the back toe and apply triple antibiotic ointment if there's a scab or irritated tissue under there.
It also looks like she may have suffered some type of cut at the back toe near the pad. Some of the foot pad and upper toe looks to have a green tinge to it, could be staining from grass(?) but usually green is an indication of bruising. You may want to investigate that bit further.

Frostbite on the tips of the toes can cause that bulbous appearance. Has it been cold enough for that?
Back in December we had really cold temps. It’s been warmer lately. The tip of her toe has a black callous that we originally thought might be bumble foot. It’s on both feet on the same toe though.

This is a borrowed picture from the chicken chick which shows the bulbous pink healthy tisse just above frostbitten tissue:

Thank you so much! Yes this is the same chicken. Do you think her back toe looks more swollen now than in my original post? Yesterday we ended up soaking her feet in an epsom bath and removed the black callous/scab on her toe and applied Neosporin and bandaged it up. She was still limping pretty bad today. I'll have to clean her feet again tomorrow and look more closely at the possible cut and bruising. I'll try to get a better picture when it's clean.

Hey, Newbie here about to post my first massive cry for help but saw this as most recent thread and though I've never dealt with any real frostbite (that then swells etc) a couple of my girls have had little spots here and there that could be from that and in effort to be preventative (as well as treatment if mild enough I think) we will put an organic/ homeopathic salve purported to be good for poultry first aid called Green Goo ;-)

yeah- sounds lovely but it's clear to SL yellowish on your finger (darker in tin) and honestly smells a bit like Vicks or similar. My girls seem to like that MUCH more than the "Hen Healer" we got at local TSC for one who was being pecked pretty bad on her head- didn't need the blue as there wasn't really blood yet, but I guess that could help deter the others but man did it look silly and she seemed to not like it- super sticky and hard to work with- this is so nice and silky that my sickest one now has always seemed to really enjoy it when I do her wattles (which are really long/big- so cleaning them up and making sure they're dry after trying to drop feed her- got sticky NutriDrench on them- so after cleaning up before a night that was to dip below freezing, I just massaged it all onto them as well as her comb. It seemed to feel good and was also hoping it would help increase the blood flow into them as they were cold and VERY pale from other issues...didn't seem to bother her or affect her breathing- while carefully getting down into her comb too... almost seems like it helped her a bit- had been sounding a tad congested?? but honestly I've never been so close and present while they sleep- they're in a new coop and I can walk in right up to their roost... so noticed her almost lightly snoring ;-) sev. days back when all my problems really started...Who knows- could be her norm! (bigger gal- named Puffy lol)

Sorry got off topic a bit ;-) but just wanted to shout out to this amazing little tin of goodness by Plants with Purpose- got some soothing human hand stuff from them too and a gentle castile animal wash for future as 1 or 2 of my girls tends to get a dirty bum.... but they have Bumblefoot as one of the conditions across the package quite large ;-) so thought of you reading this! Fyi- does have all ingredients and directions etc on package- and no I have NO interest in the company- just impressed!

Good luck- lucky chicken to have such good care! :)
