Ok well we have had Chickens for Years. And the reason why they are in cages is because of Hawks the Hawks flys in the sky searching for PREY. And while we were in Ny for a Vacation we kept there little house closes and some how a Racoon or Possum opened it and ATE our Chickens and cracked the eggs open and the Mother who was hacting eggs was going to be a mother for the FIRST time. *crys* excuse me. What do I do with the Hawk? Please leave a comment.
Wellll - I'd say if the poor hawk has passed away, bury it. I'd say if the poor hawk is injured, have mercy and put it out of its misery. I'd say if the hawk is not injured and has not yet passed, when you see it again, play baseball in your yard and aim high..but there will be another and another - they don't just go away. Sorry about your birds...sad situation. Give yourself some time to grieve, then try again. Everything is going to be all right.
To repel hawks, feed the wild birds and put shiny reflective things around to confuse the hawks.
Around here any passing hawks get mobbed by a hundred wild birds and chased away. But I still keep the chickens confined to a 12' x 45' run which has deer netting over the top, and I have old CDs tied onto the netting too.
hawks are protected unless they are attacking your livestock or property. i have dispatched a few in my day. my birds find them quite tasty lol. beats having to bury it.
