Hi everyone!

I've been learning and lurking here for awhile now, and thought it was past time I say hello.
I am in south-central PA, and hoping to start my chicken venture in the spring. I'm an avid vegetable gardener, and really enjoy producing some of my own food. Last winter, a friend said, "Now all you need is some chickens for eggs!". I laughed it off at the time, but then I started to consider it. I'm in the research and planning stage and starting to get excited!

My aim is to have 4-6 hens. I have to say my current "breed crush" is the Speckled Sussex, from what I read about their personality. Buff Orps sound fantastic for first timers, and I love the looks and productivity of the Australorp. I love the looks and history of the Dominique, too. I'm hoping to have a mixture of a couple breeds. I'm a lifelong animal lover (confession: I prefer them to humans) and as my name implies, share my life with four Pugs.

My biggest hurdle and worry will be keeping the chickens safe. There are definitely foxes around here (I hear their screams in the Spring), and likely raccoons as well. I have very limited skills in construction and carpentry, so I am scouting Craigslist for a coop, and still trying to flesh out how to do a run. Yes, I'm reading about hardware cloth!
Thanks for reading, and I will probably be back with a thousand questions. I've so much enjoyed my time here so far. :)

:welcome

Thanks for an interesting intro, you sound so excited it was fun to read :)

I've raised the SS in the past and loved them. Super pretty, good layers and sweet dispositions. One cool thing about the SS, it seemed that every time their feathers grew back from molting, they had more speckles.

Keeping our birds safe is always a big concern...there are a lot of things out there that love chicken for dinner. Here's a link to an article from the Learning Center that might be helpful: Chicken Predators & Pests - How To Protect & Treat Your Flock

Best of luck to you!

Thanks all for the welcome!

That seems to be the most consistent thing I hear - checks off all three boxes for me. I've read that they can be very curious and always underfoot, but I'm okay with that. :) Initially I was going through a "favorite breed of the week", but now I keep coming back to SS's. Thank you for the link, as well. Between this site and the Storey guide, I've been studying like I haven't since I was in college!

PS I think Pugs are adorable

They are, lucky for them! They pack a lot of energy and personality in little packages. I've told mine they might end up outside in a coop! ;)

Again, thank you all for the warm welcome
