Hi all,
I'm in San Jose, CA, looking to learn a lot so I can finally have chickens.
A bit about me-I'm an Ohio transplant, moved to CA 16.5 yrs ago. I have 2 kids, 11&16, and a 2.5yr Cavalier. We just moved to a new neighborhood a few months ago and I have a backyard for the first time here in CA! We do have a pool in the backyard but I've got a nice shady side of the yard that would be perfect for some feathered friends.
My husband isn't exactly on board with the plan yet, so that's why I'm aiming to learn as much as possible in advance so I can be as prepared as possible when the time comes(Like when DH is on a business trip). Truthfully he's just worried about smell and noise and never being abke to take a vacation. I have read some things about how to mitigate all of those concerns but would love to meet up with chicken keepers in my area for some hands on learning. I want to keep chickens for the eggs primarily, meat secondarily, and lastly for the poop. I am also starting to garden after many years away from it. Due to city rules, I can keep a max of 6 hens, no roos. I would like to buy sexed chicks but understand some may still be male. I am okay with ordering more than 6 and culling as needed. Well, at least in sentiment at this point, I may need moral support when the time comes. Looking forward to learning!
