Question. We have a chicken that seemed out of sorts yesterday. She would normally lay her eggs early in the morning but over the past week she would lay later and later.. No egg was laid during the day yesterday. She must have laid it after 9pm but It was broken when we found it in the morning. She had yoke on her rear end so we gently washed it off of her. She's normally running around and runs up to the fence. Now She's quiet, sleeps a lot and keeps to herself. If I walk up to her she gets up and moves away but lays back down when I leave her alone. We've had these chickens for two months and they have been fine. Anyone have any ideas?
 
Hi and welcome to BYC glad you could join us. I would think if you said she had yolk all over her I would think maybe she had a piece of shell that could have went and gave her an minor internal injury but I would check and feel for anything inside of her vent if you have any rubber gloves to help you though that process. If not I don't know what could be wrong unless she is egg bound and has an egg stuck inside of her.
 
I would also recommend posting on the ER thread. If the egg broke inside her, it may not have all passed out. She could have some shell or matter still inside, that could cause infection.
 
Yes but being any egg shell left inside could pass on its own but it would be a good idea to check and see what someone more experienced than me.

We kept a close eye on her and she seemed to feel better as each day passed. She started to run up to the fence and wait for her food. I decided to bring them some meal worms... to see how she would act. Wow! What a difference! She was jumping around and running! Like her old self!
