Hi there everyone. I tried searching for a similar topic to this but couldn't really find anything.

So, my chickens are about 18 weeks old & today I found my first egg in the coop. It was really nice looking. When I got home from work one of my chickens seemed off, very abnormal. I watcher her for a bit and saw her pass this sac-like egg. This would be her first egg. Is this normal or could something be wrong internally? Please any experience chicken owners..offer me any advice you have. I'm a little worried.

Here is a pic of it:

i also want to note that after that she ate the treats i gave her and seemed okay

When a hen first starts laying, there's the possibility of weird looking eggs until their plumbing gets used to laying them. I wouldnt worry about it. Once properly formed, eggs will be small at first, and as the hen ages the eggs will eventually get larger.

Sometimes that first egg is weird. But, I am concerned about people feeding excessive treats. (I'm not the only one concerned. My favorite poultry book from 1895 talks about the problems that backyard overfed pullets have!) Many pullets are too fat and that interferes with their egg laying. Also, her calcium balance might be off. If you're feeding excessive amounts of meal worms, then she can get kidney disease. So, it might be a first time egg glitch, or it might be an indication of something wrong in the big picture.

I've written a lot about funny looking eggs on my blog - I have a number of older hens, so often have odd eggs. I also have a FAQ about feeding that might be useful.

Thank you guys for your input. I do not feed an overload of treats. I never feed mealworms. I just took some out to her because I wanted to see if she was feeling okay and acting like her usual self. I'm hoping it's just a first time egg glitch

Sounds like you're doing a great job! One of the wonderful things about backyard hens is that each egg is unique, and each hen lays an egg that is specific to that hen. Once she gets going, you'll see. I had a hen that laid eggs pointy on both sides. I currently have a hen that lays rough-shelled eggs. She's fine. The eggs are fine. It's who she is. The soft eggs are another story. If she doesn't start laying properly, then there is something amiss. But, I bet she will.

I get those once in a while on the roost. If it continues and you don't have a hen laying eggs, then it could be a problem.

I had a hen that laid shelless eggs and was an internal layer. We ended up culling her at 1.5 years due to the fact that I didn't want a yolk or shelless egg to crack inside her and cause a painful infection. She had 15-20 full sized cooked looking yolks inside her. She never laid a shelled egg.

Nearly all the time you see this, it's the pullets egg track getting in order. It will straighten out. The best thing you can do is offer oyster shell.

I agree with the others. A first egg never looks "normal."
In a couple eggs, she should be fine. This is not unusual at the start.
Relax, she will be fine.
