Hi! One of my chickens, don't know which at this point, laid yolk this morning in the nesting box. I caught one of them eating it, so I cleaned it out, and on my way to the trash noticed a curled up, soft shell in the yard. Like she laid the yolk and passed the shell as she was running out to the rest of her pals. Don't know if I should be concerned about infection at this point, or what? They are free rangers with access to ouster grit, get spinach treats, yogurt, and their chicken feed is complete nutrition (they eat it at night when they come in to roost), so I wouldnt guess they're not getting enough calcium. I will narrow it down to one after the other girls have laid today, but don't what to do at that point.

How old are they?

Sometimes a younger hen will lay a "rubber egg" when she's just starting up and sometimes older hens will lay them as well (like 5 or up) There's a chance it was a fluke, it sounds like you provide all the right stuff. If you notice it often then I would be concerned for a health issue.

She's just at a year.. She laid an egg today, with a thick calciferous shell. She's acting fine.. Hopefully a freak egg!

I would think it's just a coincidence then. Sometimes they just get a hiccup. If you notice it happening a lot then I would look into other things such as worms or other bugs, adding more calcium and vitamins, etc. Good luck :)
