BYC,
I am kind of concerned lately with the behavior of one of my hens. She is a 1 1/2 year old Buff Orpington and recently she has been laying down outside a ton. It is kind of a weird situation, because she nor any of my birds have done this before, however when I come with snacks or to open the run into the yard for free ranging, she hops up and sprints out. I have 5 hens and got 5 eggs three or four days ago, so I'm not sure what to think. I have eliminated being eggbound, as I gave her a very through examination near the vent area and felt nothing. Also, her crop is not impacted or swollen, yet she is almost always laying down unless a reason to gets up arises. Her tail seems to be slightly down, yet it isn't completely down, if that makes sense. She acts healthy, but she just lays down a lot. I have bought oxetetracycline to give her, as TSC recommended it to fight a wide variety of illnesses, yet I have only given her one small does of it orally mixed in water. So again, main symptom is that she is laying down almost all the time, however when something exciting happens she pops back to life. She free ranges, and to my knowledge is still laying eggs. Does anybody have any idea about what could be wrong with her. She never really would lay down all day, so this new trend prompted me to ask. Any suggestions or thoughts? Please let me know. Thanks!!!
