One of our hens suddenly began limping last week, we thought it was a sprain and restricted her movement. However it has not improved. Vet is out until Monday.

She (tries) to be active and is eating/drinking. She moved the leg, but can't put weight on it. She also tends to hold it out forward in front of her.

We brought her in for examination. We thoroughly washed her feet and found no signs of injury or infection.

We could not find any indication of breaks or fractures. No signs of redness or swelling at any particular joint.

The only thing we found unusual is that her tendons on her injured leg feel soft and 'floppy'. Compared to her good leg which feel taut and 'hard'. The tendons feel in the right locations, no apparent dislocation or slippage.

Our best guess is a torn/injured tendon in the upper leg / hock area.

Is there a good way to confirm this? How do we treat?

A vet familiar with chickens may be able to confirm a tendon injury. They also may prescribe an anti-inflammatory drug, such as meloxicam. I would limit her activity, and not allow her to jump on or off a roost. A dog crate with food and water may be used to keep here near the others, but keep her from overusing the leg and foot. Do you know her age?

We've moved her to do her own small 'coop' within the enclosed run. We are still waiting to hear from the vet; unfortunately there are almost no vets in our area that are willing to look at poultry. She is about 2 years old

How is your hen doing now?
Is her leg better?

I have a 2 year old hen not using one leg. She is shaky and seems to be in distress.
She is a weaker hen and thin.
So right now I am watching her.
Trying to decide the best action
