Chicken lethargic, twitching, seizures - HELP PLEASE

Hello, I know this is an older thread but it’s updated every so often. I, too found this because I have a hen that I’ve been nursing since June of 2024.

I found her just hunched down one day, we had had a hot couple of weeks during that month I thought she had a heat stroke. I brought her in the house to assist her better.
I gave her a bath just in case she was egg bound, the next day she passed the egg. I took her back out on the second day but brought her back in, something was just not right.

She kept bumping into things in her crate, I realized she was now blind. I talk to her, coach her to eat and drink and she does it in demand. It’s been an uphill battle to keep her alive.

We’re now into December and have noticed her seizures increased. I’ve done everything I know to do. Doing homeopathic therapy but lately she’s regressing.

This thread has helped and given me a bit of hope.
Hi, this just to say that the way you describe your hen's symptoms is exactly what I have been dealing with with Hettie since Oct 2024, for 6 months. After all these months Hettie is still with me but her seizures have become more frequent in the last month or so. She is also blind so relies on me to help her eat and drink. If I get a reply ( know this is a very old post), I will give more detail about Hettie's sad journey

Hi there, the symptoms you describe are almost exactly like what my little Hettie has been suffering since October 2024 (for 6 months now). She is now probably completely blind and her seizures have increased in the last 1-2 months but only when she is nodding off at bedtime in the evenings. As this is an old post, I will wait for a reply before I share more detail about my little Hettie's journey with me.

Sorry to hear these stories, I wish I knew how to help. Hope you're able to sort this out.

I feel blessed my girl only seems to have issues getting in to her coop. She can't jump in, and she doesn't seem to be able to coordinate, but not sure if it's her wings or her legs. I lost her brother to a neurological issue that started with his legs.

Hooe yours get better.

Hey there! I know this is old, but I have a hen that I’ve rescued, Goldie, who seems to have some of the same symptoms as your sweet Hettie - seizures happening almost always at night and when sleeping, and she is mostly blind (she can see a LITTLE bit). When I originally found her, she was unable to walk and really struggled to stand without being wobbly, but it wasn’t like Marek’s paralysis and she ended up recovering from that. the day before I found her, she could walk just fine. I’m still struggling with her other symptoms though. If you’re willing to share, I’d so appreciate hearing more about your journey with Miss Hettie <3.

The tread starter and Ranchyhen are both not active on BYC anymore. If you click on their avatars, you can see the last time they visited BYC.

This is why its better to start a new thread if you like some answers about what happened and what to do.

My guess: she had a stroke: a cerebral infarction or a cerebral haemorrhage.
