Hi everyone,

I joined the forum yesterday looking for advice on a problem we've been having with one of our chickens. It's been a bit stressful so I'm just getting around to introducing myself!

I live in the Limousin region of France with my partner, our dog, cat and three lovely chicken girls. We are definitely beginners when it comes to chickens and am so grateful for the advice and support that I have already received from the forum members. I'm looking to learn as much as possible and eventually increase the size of our flock.

I don't eat meat so our chickens (Katherine Zeta Jones, Yubaba and E. Coco) are kept for their eggs and as pets.

How big is your flock now? What breeds do you have? How big are you hoping to make it? and How old are you chickens right now?

We only have three chickens right now, Catherine Zeta Jones the Coucou de Rennes (I thought she was a Plymouth Rock hen but I was mistaken!) plus two other French breeds who's breed-names I can't remember - I'll have to ask my partner. Though I believe one is a cross. They are all roughly 18 months old. They were actually his chickens but I recently moved in and have taken an interest in them. We would like to have around six and are in the middle of enlarging their run but have put plans on hold due to bumble-foot :(

I'm not sure what breeds there are in France, but I highly recommend a rhode island or new hampshire red. They are good in big flocks, docile, friendly and rarely present problems. I also recommend a Cinnamon Queen. They look like golden comets but are much more playful and incredibly healthy. Sex-linked birds are also really good egg layers. If you want to add a little bit of style to your flock, I would try a wyandotte, golden or silver. They are very pretty birds with relatively low maintenance.
