Hi. I have a 3 year old austrolorp that has been limping and holding up one of her feet, for past 3 weeks. She almost sounds like she’s whimpering or complaining every time she comes by me. Eating and laying seems normal. I keep inspecting it and don’t see anything unusual. She did go broody for the first time recently for almost a month. I thought maybe she was weak from being on the nest but it’s not improving. I am at a loss.

Can you get a video of her movements? Upload Video To YouTube and Provide a Link.

Photos of her legs and feet (bottom of feet) may be helpful as well.

For now, I'd give 1/4 tablet B-Complex once daily and see that she's eating/drinking o.k.

I will try to in the morning thanks!

Hi I gave her b complex and it’s already improving! Can you explain why this helped her ? The others got a little bit if it and they seem to have a little more pep. Is my flock malnourished?

What do you feed, including treats?

B-Complex usually has several B Vitamins which are essential to health. Could be they need a boost or you may need to adjust what you are feeding.

I'm glad she's improving.

Naturewise layer feed. I did switch from crumbles to pellets recently because of the mess and the wasted food. They eat significantly less now and it worries me. I was told chickens are not picky and will eat whatever I give them but I also spoil them with treats. I give them mealworms, alot of fruit and vegetable scraps.

She isn’t doing well today. Did not come out of the coop to greet me today and isn’t leaving the run, just sitting down. I guess I should mention that I had a chicken die suddenly ( healthy day before she died) happened a month ago, shortly after that was when I noticed my other hen limping. None of my hens have ever been ill before now

So is she still holding the bad leg up to her body or trying to put weight on it? You can take a small amount of the pellet feed and add some water to make a mash, and see if they like that once a day. Keep it fresh or it can mold. Does she have any other issues now, such as molting, or problems laying eggs? Is her crop emptying first thing in the morning, and then filling with food during the day? How do her poops look? Is her tail position up or down? Are your roosts pretty high? That could keep her leg from healing if it is an injury. I would consider getting a necropsy by your state vet lab if you lose another chicken. Here is a list of state vets:

The feed sounds fine.
