Chicken Little

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

I have heard similar stories of chickens just not fitting into the flock, becoming incredibly attached to their care taker and wind up as house chickens. I believe its more common than we think. As long as she is getting a lot of human attention, there is no reason she can't thrive as a house chicken. I kept a lone hen for 2 yrs, she was never lonely and seemed happier with me than with a flock.

Good luck and welcome to our roost! :)

:welcome We would love photos of your critters. Four legged, and two!
Did you know that you can buy or make a chicken diaper? You can even line it with a sanitary napkin to keep it cleaner.
I am glad you are enjoying your special girl. I wish you luck in your future homesteading. I hope the 29 additional chickens, quail, ducks, turkeys and goats you are secretly wanting are just as enjoyable as your current flock. :thumbsup:lol:

I was always envious of those people whose chickens seemed to love them. Mine always love that I feed them. Then, I was given a single chick last fall that had to brood indoors. Moving her outdoors has been an epic fail. While she will run off house cats and dogs, and neither ducks nor geese worry her, she is terrified of the other chickens.
My chickens love me because I feed them also. But this little chick you raised in the house is adorable!!! Maybe you should make a little coop and run just for her on your deck or something. Then you might try introducing her to just one hen. Unless you want a house chicken.

There are many folks with "House Chickens." Some folks aren't allowed to have chickens per se but, they make very nice "ground parrots," in the house.

I think my friend Arline pioneered that - she has had house chickens for more than 30 years. Her last three passed from Marek's disease- a day apart, that probably came inside on her silkie hen. Silkie was the only one allowed outside because she didn't fly.

Arlene has had as many 3 chickens in the house ( silkie and 2 serama hens) All non- resistant breeds to Mareks.

But one bird in the house quickly considers any human/humans and even dogs as being her flock. Arline's old dog was so used to chickens, when the last 3 passed away he looked all over the house for them. They used to steal food from his dish, take his toys, took over his bed, and would groom him .

He is a very gentle tolerant old dog. He would protect the silkie from everything when they were outside together.

BTW there is a thread "People with house chickens." for more info. Arlene didn't bother with chicken diapers. She had rags and cleaning agents at the ready, and cleaned up messes as they occurred.

When she left home on errands the chickens and dog would stay inside by the door and wait for her return.

If strangers came in the chickens would hide behind the couch and peek out now and then to see if they finally left. They freaked out repair men etc. who saw them peeking. They couldn't believe people had actual, live chickens in the house.
