First, have no idea how this happened and have not found the piece of toe missing. Id say maybe 1/4 inch of it is gone. She is acting like nothing is wrong. No sign of entry to the run or coop from another animal. Besides, figured it would be much worse if a fox or racoon got to them.

Im out of town for work but my S/o is cleaning off, spraying with anti bacterial med. Then going to put her in a large cat crate in the garage and further investigate after work.

Does it work to gauze it up or any other suggestions thanks!

Picture? Is it cold outside, is it a fresh wound?
working getting the pic. I left for out of town last night when the girls were already locked up. from the video I saw, the blood looks fairly fresh and most likely started in the coop before they were let out (we have an automatic door that opens at sunrise)
Temps are in the low 20's over night and 30-33 during the day this week

Where I live, frostbite is literally normal for toes unfortunately. I can do everything right and keep combs perfect and I'll still lose toes.

You normally don't ever find the part that falls off.

Is it possible the door was opened on her foot? That can take a nail off.

I added pics to the first post. They have dry areas for the day and I put straw down after shoveling paths in the snow. for all the years Ive had Chickens in cold weather, Ive never had frost bite issues outside spots on their combs. hmm

Unfortunately, chickens sometimes lose toes. Frostbite, other injuries like getting toes caught on things. Keep it clean until healed. An antibiotic ointment like plain neosporin or plain triple antibiotic ointment applied a couple of times a day. As long as there is no infection it should be fine. Chickens do fine with lost toes.

It's the one closest to you in the pixture, correct? That looks like she broke her nail off. That's what usually happens when a door opens over their foot or they land too hard or scratch something hard wrong

yes on the pic

our door closes down/opens upward. there are some ice chunks due to the melt/freeze going on. Im sure she will be fine. Just making sure it stays clean
