I bought my first chickens 2 days ago and they seemed more or less content, however overnight their perch broke (presumably beneath them). Two of them seem to be handling this shock all right, even if they are preening their feathers a bit more than usual, but the third is making noises that sound a bit distressed. She also keeps going inside the enclosed part of the coop with the nesting boxes, which she didn't used to do before. She may just be exploring more but I'm not sure. I have replaced the perch and now it is stronger, but is there anything I can do to make my chickens feel happier and safer?

She could have bruised herself or simply startled a bit. Tough to tell sometimes. They are explorers. I would say give it a little more time and hopefully she will be fine.

Thanks JBJ! She's scratching around more now and seems to have settled a bit, so I'll just give her more time.

Well not sure how much I helped, but you are very welcome. A while back I put a small roost up for 3 week old chicks (due to them roosting on the waterers). I spooked them entering the pen and noticed one flew into the roost pretty hard and appeared to injure itself because it made a awful sound and acted as though it got hurt. The next day she acted as though nothing was bothering her. So I figured she was tougher than I thought. Now I take my Dads advice he always told me. Announce myself before I walk up to the pen so I don't spook them opening the door. I always say "hey girls" before I get to the pen. It certainly helps, now I do that every time. Good luck and enjoy your chickens.
