She’s a rescue and I’m very confused. It’s almost like she’s trying to crow but lays eggs?! Occasional sneezing. Eats, drinks, preens all normally.

I’ll be taking her to the vet Tuesday but we have no avian specialists, so I’d love some clues to point them in the right direction.

Cancel your vet appointment, hens sometimes crow, it's not necessarily a rooster only noise.
I have a crowing hen too.
She seems to be gaping as well outside the crowing, though? I’m honestly thinking it’s some sort of general defect and she’s just an odd hen…but then the paranoid side of me is all AVIAN FLU.

Can you please post a longer video then?

I agree, it sounds like she's just crowing.

Eating/drinking and preening normally - is not avian flu.

Still, cancel your appointment.
Avian flu has other more obvious symptoms.
Sound like crowing or just sneezing. The gasping is normal since when you exhale, you need to inhale.
And if she did have Avian flu and the vet confirmed it, your birds would likely be reported and then they'd all be gassed by some agency and you'll have no say at all in the matter.

Thank you so much. I managed a longer video - of course when you want to capture something they stop doing it. She’s not making noise here, but the gaping is the same.

It reminds me of when chickens get hot, but it’s intermittent. When she’s scratching around it doesn’t occur.

I have seven 5-month-old silkies, and 2 I know are roosters. Only one tries to crow thus far and sounds just like that. You're sure she's a she? I have some old hens that make funky noises too, though.

She laid an egg, so I’m pretty sure :p
