Chicken massacre last night. Five dead, two injured.

I have an update for you all.

Two of the three injured chickens didn’t make it. I had to put them down because they were in a lot of pain.

The third injured one it’s pretty active, but I can tell she’s in a little bit of pain. I’m treating her wounds.

I’m down to six chickens now, and I started with 13.

I have an update for you all. A big one.

First off, the third hen made it. The other two that were injured did not. I had to put them down.

Now for the big news. We figured out what attacked the run. It’s bad enough that I actually need to bring it up with the Dietrich city council. My father, who is on the city council agrees.

It was a stray dog. I’ve been hearing a lot about stray dog problems in the city. But they’ve never attacked and killed chickens before. There is substantial evidence that shows it was a dog that attacked my chickens.

The first piece of evidence is what a friend of mine pointed out on another forum. The entry point that the animal used to break in was too big for a raccoon. A raccoon could’ve easily gotten in through a smaller opening.

Second piece of evidence is that it left all the bodies, it basically killed for fun. It didn’t even eat any of them. I know raccoons, they usually eat what they kill. I’ve seen it happen at a friends house. They also come back for more on following nights. However, this was a one time event and nothing has come back.

Third piece of evidence is this:

I found these near the coop the day of the incident. I thought it was not important, because I thought it was a raccoon that broke in. However, there were no raccoon tracks. Just these. Obviously dog tracks.

The fourth piece of evidence is a witness report. I recently heard that on the day of the incident somebody saw a big black dog running away from behind my house. Behind my house is where the chicken coop is located.

All the evidence points to a stray dog that broke into the coop and started killing the chickens.

My father, who is on the Dietrich city council, says that I should bring this up at the next city council meeting.

I am definitely going to bring it up.

It seems difficult for many people to accuse dogs as killers of chickens, sheep etc. Often a wild animal like a fox or a wolf gets the blame (there are no raccoons in my country).

Accusing other predators, in the spell of the moment, often happens in my country too. Until further investigation. On second thought or after the investigation , like on your premises, its often obvious it was an unleashed dog(s) that killed.
