Chicken math….. what did you start with? What do you have now?

I LOVE looking at other peoples flocks. And what they own - and how they differ in breeding lines than ours in Australia!
So what breeds do you have?
What started your “flock” and what does your flock look like now?
Is there a reason for your breed of choice? (Pretty chickens, eggs, versatility etc) do you have a favourite in your flock? If so, who? And why!

We just have a “backyard” flock.. our girls are purely for pretty looking and fresh eggs!!
We have - Brahmas, Cochins, Polish (pure and cross), Leghorn, Quamby, Belgian Duccle, vorwerk, Araucana, Favorelle, marans, Olive Egger, and some mixed Brahma babies (unsure what crossed with).

Way back when - we started with White Leghorns.
Now - Speckled Sussex, CCLs, Black Sexlinks, a few Olive Eggers, and two silkies.
Future endeavors - We will be working towards an all Speckled Sussex flock.

We have so many breeds- black australorp, barred rock, columbian rock cross, buff Orpington, lavender Orpington, turken, easter egger, sapphire sky, Brahma, starlight green egger, speckled Sussex, a BCM (I think), and few different BYM
I love all chickens, but different egg colors really interests me!! I honestly jsut enjoy their company though. My favorite chicken right now is half BCM/ half sebright bantam. She’s a sweetie.

I enjoy their company too. There’s something nice about sitting out with them while I have a morning coffee that just soothes the soul

Here she is!! She’s still a young pullet. But very easy to handle because of her temperament. I also love my buff orpingtons

We got our start from a lady at church who probably had 75 to 100 chickens and told us to pick whatever we wanted. I think we took 8 hens and a rooster, knowing nuthin' about nuthin', lol. I picked for pretty because all I needed was birds that would keep the tick population down and give us a few eggs. I didn't even know how old these gals were! I know now that we had at least two GLW and that the rooster was a BJG.

Fast forward to today. In 15 years we've had many EE, some Dominiques, FBCM, Blue CM, Brown Leghorns, Black Australorps, Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpingtons and some I probably don't remember. But now I'm moving toward Ameraucanas. I have six black pullets and two black cockerels in my otherwise mixed flock, but I plan to re-home the non-Ameraucanas (Ams) this spring. I've ordered some Ermine Ameraucana pullets (there's a limit of five; they're gorgeous, Google them!) and some blue ones to be delivered this spring. I've also ordered some Dominiques so I can breed some green egg layers by breeding to the Am cockerels.

My cockerels are just starting to crow and the pullets aren't laying yet. They were hatched July 4th, I think, so they are just over 5 months old, and they mature slowly. Why this breed? Blue eggs, nice temperament, small combs (no frostbite risk) and I just think they're beautiful. Also, I hope to sell chicks, eggs and started pullets down the road. Maybe my DH can finally retire!

She’s so pretty! Her colours remind me of my beautiful Brahma x polish who we named Goose.

Oops, I forgot to add that from our original flock of 8 hens and a rooster (Elvis), we now have 28 girls and 2 cockerels (13 black pullets named Moony, because of @The Moonshiner and because they all look alike, 6 Black Australorps and 7 black Ameraucanas, bad planning on my part!), and the 2 black Ameraucana cockerels are named Moon Shadow and Moon Walker. And then 15 OG girls, of different varieties for a total of 30, count 'em THIRTY BIRDS. And 15 more coming in April. But the number is temporary, I plan to re-home the 15 OG or most of them this spring. CHICKEN MATH! HELP! I'M A VICTIM OF CHICKEN MATH!

One (or two) of everything that the hatchery had available at the time, essentially

Ancona, Ameraucana, Brahma, Austra White, Wyandotte, Rhode Island Red, Barred Plymouth Rock, Crested Cream Legbar, Orpington, Marans

And now some of their offspring, who are so... full of personality... (dramatic)
One of them is half viper. (Admittedly I've never met a viper, but she's a fast striker)
She's a hoot to have around.
We're going to be best buds...
