I just sold 3 Delaware hens. I have 3 older hens who are suffering from reproductive issues and that I will probably lose very soon. Just sold the remainder of my extra chicks (Thanks, Kullas!), so am left with my 7 keepers, which consist of 6 pullets and 1 cockerel. I'm downsizing.

Yup, my keepers consist of 1 Black Rock pullet, 2 Blue Rock pullets, 1 Barred Rock pullet, 1 black Ameraucana pullet, 1 BLRW/Amer cross pullet (I think) and 1 Blue Wheaten Ameraucana cockerel. They will be 5 weeks old Wed. Now, all those together only equal one adult chicken, right?

Over time, I think I'll let the numbers dwindle down to about half of what I have now. Eventually, I think I may want a number of birds where we can get away for a day or two and know they'll be safe locked in the coop with enough food and water. I'm thinking about a small flock of D'Anvers, actually, in addition to a few adult standards. So, it's sort of permanent downsizing and shifting gears.

Speckledhen, you've just blown my image of you living in the Georgia mountains surrounded by hundreds of chickens. Sigh.

However, you are correct in your assessment that our needs and priorities change as we grow in one way or another.

Good luck with your remaining few.

I sort of like that image, but hundreds?? Don't ever let my DH hear that one. Or me, for that matter--I may get ideas! I love my birds, but the cost of feed and shavings and this awful winter have all combined for me to come to this decision. I have three big, beautiful, dark RIR ladies I am going to part with, I've decided, and I'm giving first choice to my buddy, rooster-red. If Lee doesn't want them, they'll go up for auction here. So, with three Dels gone, three RIRs gone and the three I'm thinking won't survive much longer, that's nine birds gone.
