CHICKEN MATH STRIKES AGAIN

It's a good thing DH doubled the size of my coop last week.... I have 12 year old hens, 14 "teenagers" and I got a call from my cousin- a teacher whom I told I would take her science class hatching project chicks (thinking there would be three or four) and tomorrow I go to pick up what looks to be 14 or so according to the picture :) DH just shakes his head....and when I mentioned curtains for my newly remodled coop he laughed at me. I would give him the boot, but I need him around to keep making more coop and run space for me!

I'm feeling blue. Don't know why but found myself lying about my chickens. I work as a teacher and today arrived some chickens I ordered for my grandmother(and some for me shhhhh). Had to take them to work today because I had no time to take them home since I picked them up from the postal office at lunch time. The other teachers looked at me weird and asked about the chickens. I told them I ordered for somebody else.:(. They still looked me weird. .I suppouse chicken math is fun for me if nobody else notices. Have to work with myself and stop caring what my coworkers care.

About 3 months ago we decided we were going to get chickens. I figured we would order 12 girls. I went into TSC and they had straight runs of plymouth rocks and jersey giants. Came home with 3 of each. Ended up with 1 rooster and the rest girls. So I thought I would go back and get some pullets when they came in. They had bantams. Way too cute to leave at the store. Brought home 4 pullets, & 6 straight run bantams. Ended up with 4 bantam roosters. Had to get rehome the first rooster and three of the chickens, they didn't play nice with the bantams. So I decided to go ahead and order 10 pullets. Now I have 1 bantam rooster that will have to be culled do to illness. And of course now we are hatching eggs to breed and sell the chicks and the eggs. But my kids have already "claimed" some of the eggs for themselves.

- And sometimes, we have to "subract" in chicken math.....the babies I was supposed to get tonight were given to someone else. (Two people were trying to find homes fo rthem ,and I guess they both found some!) It's ok though... I will be content wit hmy 26, and get a bator in th espring for my sex link experiment with my SLW girls and NHR boy.

We started out with 2 trios: Ameraucanas and French Marans. I wanted more "eye candy" in the yard. Got a B.O.....Not enough! So I took in a quad of Salmon Faverolles. Right after I bring them home, both of my French Marans hens decide to share a large clutch of eggs

.

Then, I'm trolling BYC looking for some, you know, "stuff," and I see PiperOmar has 4, 2 wk old SF pullets! Yes!! I pm her and arrange to get the chicks (tomorrow :) and she makes me an offer on a trio of LBCs! How could I refuse that?! Then, she throws in several free-bees.....

We have a lot of acreage and it's a good thing we were planning to expand the coop run this weekend....we already need it!

This is a great thread, I love reading people's experiences.... Now I have a "redneck aquarium" too! They are so much fun to watch.

I started out with a limit of 10 (didn't want to get overwhelmed lol) we since I bought a straight run because we wanted a roo, I noticed a couple of my "girls" look more like "boys". SO, we went back to Atwoods and picked up 5 more pullets last night. LOL I couldn't help it. Hubby at first was like, you pick the breed and I'll do the building and feeding. He saw some EE's that he liked and now the kids want a duck....we may be adding more soon..LOL. Thankfully I listened to y'all and built my coop bigger than I needed...LOL I have room for about 20 chickens in the coop. I may have to add on the run soon so that I can have more...

It's sad that people can't accept that we're not all alike and just be OK with it. I have some things my family and friends think are just too crazy and it's easier just not to talk to them about any of it. Your chickens are nothing that should bother anyone else. I'm sorry you're in a situation where people can't just appreciate who you are, especially when it's such a fun and harmless hobby.
