Ok... so I bought my farm last year... left the beautiful coop empty but this spring I couldn’t do it anymore.. raised and grew up with chickens and my mother has a huge flock.. I have all farm animals and WANTED chickens.

My coop is 15 x 18 with a 3x6 storage room (for feed and such I guess) just inside the door. It is partitioned off with several 4 foot gates so I can use a 4x4 section, another 4x4 and then have the rest of the coop open. It has a lot of ventilation and also a sliding door that opens to a run which is probably 15 x20 chain link with flight fence on top... an additional 15x20 attached but no flight fence enclosing just the chain link. This whole thing is inside a no climb fenced field (one of my horse pastures) and has full electric run to it- has a breaker box in it and all.

My math using 4 sq ft per chicken I can have a silly amount of 36 chickens... so the 16 I plan to have should not be an issue..

I am getting all youngsters... I have so far 5 silkies (pets), 2 barred rock pullets, 1 golden comet (pullet) all about 3 weeks today.
I just got 3 black Australorps (pullets) that are a week and a few days today. I am a little concerned about them as they are very quiet right now... all are eating and drinking but mostly resting... I don’t remember my babies 3 weeks ago being this quiet... I have them in a separate brooder than the other 8 because they just look so little compared to my dinosaurs... once they’ve gotten a little bigger I’ll integrate everyone.

I am picking up 3 straight run olive Eggers (2nd gen OE X Marans) tomorrow that are probably the same size as the Australorp (they are 2 weeks)

And I pre reserved a trio of cream legbars for the end of the month which will be day old. (2 pullet and 1 cockerel)

So all of my flock will be what I call known to be docile and pretty agreeable.
If I have to I can split the coop to a 4x8 section and the rest, 2 4x4 sections and the rest, or hopefully everyone coexists...

Thoughts? I have people that already want my eggs.

All I can say is... Lucky!! :lau

From my math, you could hold 60 chickens if you left the entire coop and both runs open. That's a great sized coop!! :D

but decided to go with 4 sqfoot and NOT count the runs
As it should be, as a minimum.
Can depend on your run and climate.

Save room for fresh layers next year.
Would love to see pics (jeally of all that space).

Welcome to BYC! @Doublete
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

I’ll try to get photos today! Nothing is cleaned up outside yet in the run. Because they won’t be going out for awhile.

I’m on the md border in pa. (Eastern pa) pretty mild winter this year but we CAN have winters... having horses I was very grateful for what we had.

Here are my new baby Australorps (and they’re much more active today- they must have needed to settle in)

And a couple pictures of my coop. Excuse the inside- it isn’t set up with roosts or nest boxes yet- there are still some random things (a shop vac to finish cleaning lol) in there
I haven’t decided on the coop floor yet... (what I’m going to put down)
