I ordered a dozen chicks from a hatchery. The hatchery did not have Ameraucanas available so I checked out craigslist. My hatchery chicks arrived Tuesday and the others hatched today. I gently broke the news to my husband that I had to pick up more chicks today. He was confused at first but then caught on to my plan. He asked, "now how many?" I said about 2, knowing that I would get at least 4. Now this whole conversation was taking place on the way to TSC. When we walked into TSC they didn't have chicks but they did have ducklings. Very very cute ducklings. At this time he was thinking what I was thinking and said, "we should get ducklings." I just smiled and said, "and this is how chicken math begins." I was firm and walked out of TSC without ducklings...this time.

I love chicken math!!

So, I want to add a couple hens to my flock, but the feed store doesn't have the breeds I want. Well, that means I had to hatch them. And that means I had to bid on ebay. I like variety and you can't count on a great hatch rate with shipped eggs, so I bid on several different breeds, ended up winning on 4 bids, (even though I really only wanted 3 new breeds

Of course, all the sellers include extra eggs when they ship. I ended up with 45 eggs and got more than 50% hatch rate, 25 chicks!! Well, I have to keep 2 or 3 chicks for every one I want to keep 'cause there will be roosters, right? sigh. I'll have to keep at least 7 and wait until we find out how many we like...
