Chicken math

Now that my girls are starting to lay it's a good thing my coop isn't big enough for more chickens because I want so many more with different color eggs! I've got a light brown and a blue/green so far. I want one of the dark chocolate brown eggs. What lays that?

copper maran's lay the chocolate brown eggs

Maran, or Welsummer will deliver dark brown eggs.

I've got 2 Welsummers and can't wait to see their eggs! Next spring, after I feel more confident in my ability to care for all my chickens, I'll consider getting Wheaten Marans from a local breeder, who's got them laying eggs as dark and darker than his French Black Copper Marans. Or, I might stick with Welsummers and get more of them because I think they lay more eggs per week than Marans.

So I gave a cochin away this morning that definitely looked like it was going to be a rooster. So now I am thinking up adding to my order that is shipping next week. I have a bunch of varieties shipping but I only got one bird of five different varieties, straight run bantams. Now I am thinking of getting at least two of the straight run because I am only keeping hens and who wants to pay for shipping twice right and this doubles my chances. Logical right?

You should go for 3 of each variety. Then if you have to rehome males it is more attractive if a female can go with. (Of course you could keep the females)

Where are you ordering from if I may ask?

I actually got a text and a phone call from two different people today who I had given cockerels to that were asking me whether I had anymore to give away because they love how friendly and healthy the ones they got from me are. Thankfully people in the area really only see some of the more common chicken breeds so, thus far, I have had multiple people within hours of posting jump at the chance for a cockerel of a bantam or odd variety (polish, cochins, etc). Here is to hoping that it continues to be that easy!

Thus far for my order next week I have:

1 Leghorn pullet (husband wants an effective white layer)
1 Dominique pullet (to replace one that we lost to an owl)
1 Spangled Russian orloff pullet
2 Salmon Faverolle pullets
1 Gold laced cochin pullet (standard)
1 bantam Dark Brahama straight run
1 bantam Mille Fleur d'Uccle straight run
1 bantam Porcelain d'Uccle straight run
2 partridge silkies straight run
2 red silkies straight run
1 bantam black tailed white Japanese straight run
