Chicken math

This is my chicken story. in Aug 2011 i moved into a my wife's dead grandmas house. i hated animals. all animals. i had never seen a chicken and didn't want one either.

One of my Neighbors gave me Pedro. He hatched with his brother on July 11th 2011. He gave me a cage for him so i put a blanket over it, but he kept getting out, and sleeping in my trees. So i bought him a hen so he wouldn't be alone. Pedro is my Old English Bantam.

the hen i bought him turned out that she couldn't lay eggs. So i gave her away and bought him three more. Then i became a member here. Hired some people to cut a hole in my back shed to be a door on the side to the run, put a new roof on, build a window, and a run, and some egg boxes.

I made it up to 13 with 4 roosters before i moved to Yucaipa, then i gave them all away but Pedro and one hen.
this was because i didn't know the laws here. she is infertile. she is my American Game Bantam.

so then one of my wife's friends from church, her sisters kids did a science project for school and gave me 14 more. 4 died from a disease from a dead rat. i killed one. and 3 dogs killed another. these are my White Leghorns.

I bought 1 Rhode Island Red, then i bought 1 RIR or DR i don't know witch yet. And two turkeys.

And i have 15 Jersey Giants hatched on June 29 witch will be here between the 30th and the 2nd. and i will have 27 chickens and 2 turkeys.

I plan on buying 1 more bantam hen for Pedro so he can have more Children.

I love chickens and have i big love for nature now too. And Pedro was a big part of bringing me out of a big depression, only my Wife, and Jesus have done more.

I started out with my daughter and her boyfriend wanting to raise chickens, BUT, they were not allowed to have chickens were they live. SOOO, it was Dad can we put a coop in the back yard and raise a FEW (17) chickens for egg. "We'll take care of them, we'll come up every day and feed them". I SHOULD HAVE KNOW BETTER!!! The next thing I know it's "Dad could you feed the chickens today." "Today" changed into very day, or almost every day. That was March of 2014.

Now Dad feeds his girls (and boy) every day and loves it. I get upset if someone else tries to take care of them. I really fell in love with the two Bantams we have. They are my grand daughters, yea right. They are Old English Game Hens one black and the other wheaten. A friend of your is a Pre-K teacher and every year she hatches eggs in a incubator in her classroom. So I asked her to use our eggs this year. Well, I gave her 6 of our eggs and I bought 8 bantam eggs and 9 Americans eggs. Thinking we would maybe get 10 chicks. WELL, my daughter thought isn't the kool. Lets hatch some eggs at our house (when I say "our house" I mean my house). So, she bought 18 eggs from a farmer and we but 4 our our egg in the incubator..........

According to my math (thinking not all the eggs would hatch) we should have the most of 30 chicks. But, according the chicken math we actually have 43.

Then my wheaten went broody again (fourth time) and soft heart Papa let her have 2 eggs. I did know the other chickens would help her out and add more eggs. So, she had 4 eggs to hatch. I figured out to mark them so I didn't end up with more.

Now we have 46 new chicks and 2 bantams, 14 hens, and one rooster.

I'm building a new coop. AND I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!!!

Moved 56 baby keets out to their new brooder pen my hubby built me yesterday..... Either he is all on board with my addition (chicken math) or he just can't figure out how to stop me.....

So, what kind are you getting

Or maybe the better question is how many? Roosters eat much more than hens, so you should be able to rationalize getting more now right?

That is where my hubby is at with it all lol.

43 yes I still have 43. I really need to do some subtraction very soon. Pullets getting into ready to lay status and little old ladies getting into the never laying status.

I have been working on my new coop so that my chicken math can be accommodated.

As I was showing my wife my progress yesterday, she suggested that maybe we could just use the whole shed! After already building my dividing wall!

So my head suddenly started shopping again, and I realized that with all this space, maybe I should just start hatching my own hehe.

I can't he held (totally) responsible if more eggs hatch than planned ;) ;)
