So I went to the Co-Op today and bought Di-Methox Sulfadimethoxine Antibacterial Solution Powder to put into my chickens water. Vet said this should fix the problems that I am having with my bird. Hopefully, none of the rest of them will get sick. Sure hope she makes it.

When I bought her as a chick, not knowing how old she was but she was very small. I figure about 2-4 wks old. She got FAT really fast along with my roo, both Rocks. He started acting really funny. Started turning his head almost all the way a round. I started watching him and decided that he must be blind in one eye and was twisting to be able to see. Now I am just not sure. He was fine at first but I had 4 newbys in the same cage, all bought at the same time, until I could get my henhouse done. When I put them in the coop, about 6 wks later, they started growing very fast. The Rocks got really big, really fast. I noticed that when he started twisting his neck as he did that he was also losing feathers on his underside. Eventually he died. Now My hen doesnt twist her neck like he did but she is losing feathers on her underside just as he did and she gained weight just as fast as he did. She seems to be gasping for air all the time. She is very overweight. The rest of my birds that I bought at the same time seem to be fine. I have given them the Di-methox in their water and she seems to be a little better today, however, I think there is more going on with her. I have not raised chickens in the past 20 yrs and I have never had these problems. All that I have ever raised have been so easy to take care of, disease free. Any suggestions?

News update on my hen with her medical problems. Gave her the med in her water for 5 days now. She is doing better, lots better but she now has some open wounds on her wings. Does anyone know what I should give her for that? I noticed one of the other hens pecking at that wound today ans was wondering if maybe she has maggots but she wont let me get close enough to find out? Would neosporin help her? Or is it another trip to the Co-Op?

Can you post a photo of the one that's sick?
What yo describe sounds like some cornish cross got mixed in with your Rocks? Are they white?
We had one mixed in with our batch. The weight gain, feather loss on the underside, gasping for air, etc, all sounds just like we went thru with Big Bird, he eventually had to be culled & ended up as dinner....

She has feathers missing from her chest to her butt. Since I have given her the med in her water she is doing so much better but I fear this problem is far from solved. She has stopped gasping for breath and looks as tho she might be losing weight which makes me think she might have been swollen. She has some injury to one of her wings but I figured it was the rooster topping her several times a day. Might have to make dinner outta him or at least separate them. I saw one of the hens picking at her would and thought maybe she had maggots in there and the other hen might have been grooming her. Actually, I just dont know what to think anymore. Never had these problems before Also, at times she seems to swell out in her chest and I was wondering if this is a normal thing that hens do? Havent noticed any of the rest of them doing that.
