I am sitting here crying. I gave away my pet chickens. I fought mites for a week and lost. Major infestation. I sprayed the coop 3 times and dusted once. I did the Ivomec drops on their back and no change. I was getting bit bad. I had them crawling up my nose and getting in my eyes. Not just in the coop but after showering at night. After a week I could not take it any longer. I posted on a local group and had a guy come get them. They were my babies eating out of my hand grapes and apples. I am devistated. I may have been too quick on this. I have no one to help me dust them so the drops where my option. I did try spraying a few with delute permectrin per label. I was so tormeted and could not get any answers from the state vet school other then put the chickens in your bathroom for a few days and keep dusting the coop. Umm nope. 12 chickens with mites in my bedroom bathroom??? I could not take the crawling and biting at night. I got the RID lice shampoo and did a head to toe shampoo and finally got relief. I also went by after hours clinic and got a percription for the permectin cream (5 %) I have not needed to use it. I am now pet less and devestated. Just a lonely old lady in the country by herself. Now what. The guy supposedly is a breeder who sells chicks off the internet group and at chicken swaps. He said he was going to use them for that. The girls are 3 -5 years old and the 4 roos are the same age. total of 12. Should I try to continue sparying and dusting coop then try to buy them back at a high price? What to do.

Permethrin 10 from the feed store is what's usually recommended, mist spray at night while the chickens are roosting ... Spray under them while they are on the roost, spray their coop (every crack as that's where they hide), nest box need to be sprayed and bedding changed (burned).

At one time I used to allow my chickens to run my yard & they'd roost with my cat in the patio on a stand. Dept of Health explained to me why chickens are kept in a coop and not in the house. In those days Malathion was allowed, I had to spray my whole yard & house (attic & walls). Stunk horrible that my kids & I could not stay in the house for the weekend. Since then I keep chickens penned away from the house.

You'll need to remove all the bedding in the nest box & coop (burn), spray the coop & run, surrounding area. Being that you had them in your living quarters (that was bad advice) it's going to take several treatments (eggs hatch) in your house & chicken quarters. Check with your Dept of Health to find out what's recommended to use for in your house, perhaps calling the experts (fumigation).

So very sorry for your having to give up your chickens but your health is more important. My advice would be to start over once the infestation is dealt with :hugs
