(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
This is our 4th batch of chicks. They just came in today I picked them up at the post office at 7:30 this morning.
Our first batch was probably 12 yrs ago or so and it was a nightmare. No matter what we did we couldn't keep the coons from getting them. Now our coop is like fort Knox.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 17 baby chicks as of this morning.
our last bunch of chickens we had for 2.5 - 3 yrs. Then one day our senile 12 yr old female English Mastiff for some reason decided they must all die. She broke down the door to our coop and killed them all.
(3) What breeds do you have?
White Jersey Giant
Buff Orpington
Speckled Sussex
Giant Cochin
Light Brahama
DARK Brahama
Delaware
My dream chicken to have some Mottled Javas but I can NEVER find them.
I want them so badly tho. I would love to raise some separate from the other chickens.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I find them so soothing. I love having our own egg supply and also meat if we choose to.
I love the sound of them cackling and crowing. Especially waking up to it. The days seem fresher and better when a rooster is your alarm clock.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My husband is an exceptional armor and all things gun related. Including Restoration and customization right down to aesthetics. He is also a fantastic woodworker.
I love to paint, do ceramics and pottery, My daughter and I both love to sew and design fashions. I also make Victorian clothing.
We also seem to have a habit / hobby of taking in "defective" animals.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 3 children. The oldest (28) is married to a wonderful woman and we have an adorable hot mess granddaughter.
Our middle is 22 and in college. He is studying in the medical profession.
Our youngest is 20 and in college. She is studying business and entrepreneur she wants to design fashion and have her own clothing line / store.
My husband is semi-retired (military /LEO) and has his own gun business. (Restoration and customization)
I am an out of work Cosmetologist/Aesthetician and Instructor due to a near fatal car wreck.
We love huge dogs and up to last year we had 3 English Mastiffs and a Great Dane. Sadly our 3 yr old Dane died very unexpectedly after emergency surgery (he ate a tshirt and became obstructed) and then we had to put our matriarch 12 yr old Mastiff down because she couldn't walk anymore. So we started off 2019 with 4 dogs and ended 2019 with 2 dogs and very broken hearts.
We have a 27 yr old horse and a 50 yr old pony that are joined at the hip. We rescued the pony from an abusive situation.
I would LOVE to get a mini milk cow for our mini farm.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :
I have known about BYC forseveral yrs. Probably since our last batch of chickens. Decided to join now because I am new to ducks and have questions and I have 2 new chicks as of this morning that I am afraid are NOT going to make it.
