Chicken myths and old wives' tales, please!

Well I love the statements that I get from family and friends...some of my favs :

"Well you KNOW you're house will be filthy all the time now!" (This from my sister who doesn't know what a broom/mop is for) And I've got 6 kids...if they can't destroy my house then chickens will NOT be a problem. Besides what am I gonna do bring them inside to have a party?! LOL (The chickens....the kids are inside already ...LOL )

I have EE's so we get some pink and blue eggs. My husband had to take some into work because no one would believe that chickens laid blue eggs. And then everyone asks..." what do they look like inside?" "Helloooooooooooooo I'm betting it looks like an EGG! LOL

This is a really fun post!

My neighbor, who has 50 laying hens, insists on having roosters because she believes fertile eggs are more nutritious.

But what irks me is the other thing she believes: She says that if a chicken's feathers look good (full-feathered, healthy hens) that means they're not laying well. Said she saw that in the almanac.

I wish she'd can the roosters because her hens strip them of feathers. I rescued the last one so he'd survive the winter, but I'm not taking in any more!

I can't convince the people at work that my duck eggs are safe to eat - they say it just doesn't seem right - this from a single guy who buys at least 3 dozen chicken eggs every other week from me because eggs are easier to fix. Also, people always ask me how I keep from getting lice "all birds have lice" they insist. Hmmmm, ever hear of species specific, people?! They are also afraid that since I have roos they will get a baby chick from the egg some time......I gather all the eggs twice a day and only sell the ones from the nest boxes.....hmmmm, fast growing chicks?! Someone was worried once because the yolks of my eggs are so much deeper orange than store bought eggs.....hmmm good feed and free ranging perhaps?! I have had some worry because mine are "free range"...how do I control what they eat?!!!! Hahaha, I think I am going to tell them about the thread about feeding road kill to their chickens!!!! You should have seen their faces when my roo Mikey got his comb hurt and I told them I brought him into the house to get the bleeding stopped! Mind you we are not city, we are rural NW Ohio.....God's Farm Land!!!!

a clerk at the orscheln store where i bought my first chicks said that when a chick is just starting to feather out about 1/2 inch or so of feather----if you spread the wing out a hen will be alternate long and short feathers--the rooster will be all long feathers she said this does not work on white birds only colored chickens i got 3 out of 4 pullets

of course they were all welsummers and they were advertised as rhode island reds

another way --again with the feathers when the neck feathers have grown in spread the ends of the neck feathers against your hand and look close if the feathers are edged in white the hens will have rounded feathers and the roosters will be pointed 2 exceptions sebrights and one other which i cannot remember

this last method seems to work as i can identify most of my roosters before they crow and thus sell them early
this method in combination with color(barred rock and cuckoo maran roosters are lighter color than hens)

A man that works with my husband wanted to by some of our eggs. My husband took in a dozen blue eggs and when the man saw them he said he could not eat them because they were rooster eggs. He truly beleived that a rooster had laid them and would not by them. My husband asked him if he could have a baby? He replied "No of course not." He told him "Neither can a rooster" LOL:lau

I know a woman (who now has a PhD) who seriously believed that white eggs were brown eggs that had been bleached. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I heard that one.
