Okay so we are getting 5 new chicks: 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Silkie, and 1 Light Brahma. I am super excited to see how our older chickens: Luna (barred rock), August, and Cocoa (RIR) react to the new chicks! Anyways! I am the kind of person who thinks in advance cause I have nothing else to do.

I am more of the type that I have to wait until I spend some time with the animal and let the name come to me. It can result in some delays, and some animals never really getting named. My goose is Goose or Goosey, which was preceeded with Baby until she was full grown at 3 months. I was thinking of changing it to Alex but she comes to Goose so I suppose I should keep it. Edit to add: She is a wild goose and we expect she will take off sometime next year, so that is another reason not to name her and get too attached.

I got 6 chicks the other day and I have only named the smallest. I am calling him Sylvester. He's the youngest and tiniest but thinks he's a tough guy. He tried to run up on one of my guineas like he was going to beat him up and the first thing that came to my mind was Sylvester Stallone lol. If he turns out to be a she I suppose I'll call her Sylvia. The others I am still working on.

My guineas, on the other hand, I did name not based on personality (except one). Most are named for the characters on Lost since that is one of my favorite TV shows. Jack, Kate, Charlie, Claire, Sun, Hurley and Sawyer. The one with a personalized name is Paul because since the beginning it has been his/her job to yell and scream when she thinks a fight is going to break out, which made me think of Paul Revere riding through town. Of course, it's probably a hen knowing how guinea hens are, but I'll still call her Paul. I still have 4 more to name and I've had them 2 months. They don't seem to mind though lol.

My first chick that I personally hatched, I named Uno. After that, who knows what I base them on, but generally, I have to be around them at least a short amount of time. Grace, the Silver Grey dorking I just hatched, got her name within 24 hours. Everyone gets their name at different times, some 2 weeks after I get them.

Maggie, Remington, Missy, Mr.Silkie, Lacy

I feel the same way, I think you need to see it first and spend some time
with it before you name it but, everybody is different!

I've got 6 hens and 1 cockerel. The cockerel is named Kevin after my favorite character on the 3 2 1 Penguins. My three Silver Laved-Wyandottes are all named Speeder (my son named them that because they are all faster than he is.) The other three Australorps don't have names. My two Sweetgrass turkeys are named T-Bone and Cleo (from the Clifford books.) As you can see I'm very original with my names and none of them have to do with the personality of the bird.
