I’m looking to rehome my one year old chicken. I had 4 others that died this morning, I don’t know what from, their feathers were all over the yard but no signs of blood. My last girl is sad I can tell, and lonely. Hubby doesn’t want to get anymore chickens, as that was my idea or to bring her inside which he also doesn’t want… I’m at a loss right now as what to do. I don’t want her outside alone, so my only other idea is to get her rehomed to someone with chickens.

Where are you located?

I'm sorry for your losses. Do you know what the others died from and if they may have had anything contagious? This may need to be a consideration before rehoming to another chicken keeper.

You are correct in that chickens get lonely and should be with others. I wish you the best in finding her another home. Please update your location information or this thread with the general area / state where you are.

If you still have the bodies of the chickens that died you can get them necropsied (animal autopsy) to find out why they died. Or if your last bird dies, you can refrigerate her body (double plastic bag) and send her to a state lab or maybe a local vet for this service, it should not be expensive. Let us know if you decide to do this and we can give you a list of state labs. I'm sorry for your losses.

If you're for sure done with chickens, (it sounds like you were the main care giver) and don't want to acquire more, you can look into local farm swaps as an option, usually held on weekends in parking lots of TSC stores, Rural King, etc. There are usually people that sell or trade livestock and you might have success there. Also check with your local livestock feed stores as they tend to know everyone and might be able to provide contacts.
