My chickens started laying 2 weeks ago and their coop of in desperate need of cleaning because of the ducks that decided they wanted to go in the chicken coop instead of thier own. Do I not clean the beating box. I have 3 chicken 2 are laying. They share a nest.but the nesting box is also gross. Or is it safe to clean the while coop including the nest.

Also the chickens are only 4 months old. They were born in may. I was surprised they started laying I have 2 sexlink and 1 barred rock. I think the barred rock and 1 sexlink is laying. Bc I got 1 speckled egg and 1 brown egg a day.

If the nesting boxes are gross/poopy ... Your gonna have gross/poopy eggs ...

If you want clean eggs ... Either wash them, or clean out the nesting box, and put clean bedding in there ... Keep the duck in their own coop, since they have their own place to mess up!

The eggs are spotless surprising.
So it is ok to clean up the nest. I don't want to stress them out by having to make a new nest. I have made the duck coop into a feeding house since they like to stay with the chickens. They stay on the floor in the corner and chickens in thier own nesting box. It's funny they quack at the chickens when bed time wait for the chickens to go into the nesting boxes and then the ducks go in.

It sounds like your chickens are sleeping in the nest boxes. That probably accounts for why the boxes are so dirty. Do you have a roost for them to perch on at night so they don't sleep in the nests.

There is a roosting bar in the coop the ducks sleep under it and the chickens do sleep in nesting box. The ducks wait until they r up in the nesting box so they can go in and go to sleep. It's comical. They had 1 nest that the 3 of them share. I got an egg today that was as thin as paper and broke open.

You'll want to make sure that the roosting bar is HIGHER than the nesting boxes...otherwise they'll sleep in the nesting boxes.

Or you can block off the nesting boxes with cardboard or something. They poop at night so that's why your boxes are gross. I have a poop tray under my roosts & are they gross!
