Chicken newbie in Hawaii

Aloha from Maui,

I wanted to see how your poultry project is coming along. I'm keeping a flock of 20 pullets and 3 cockerels, 2 Muscovy ducks, and 6 newly acquired baby Muscovy ducklings. I'm hoping for lots of eggs starting in the fall.

I got my Barred Rocks and Australorps from Dell's feed store (not sure if they're on the big island). I picked up my 3 Easter Egger pullets from Kaya at Hale Malu farms. He's specializing in Marans btw. I'm pretty sure he ships to all the islands. I'm in the process of arranging to have him hatch out some Speckled Sussex, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and Marans for my next flock. The only other resource for chicks that I know of is Asagi on Oahu. I haven't done any business with them though.

I would defiantly recommend raising Muscovy ducks. They're hardy, disease resistant, forage for as much food as they can, they make yummy eggs and are excellent mothers.

I wouldn't do any business with Hale Malu farms because they are not honest but that is up to you. Asagi on Oahu is good and there are many good hatcheries that ship to Hawaii. He just orders from cackle hatchery then charges you triple. If he orders from the mainland you might as well do the same.

I live on the Big island of Hawaii on an acre and a half with my boyfriend, almost 2 year old daughter, dog, three cats, and we have 27 chicks of various ages (ten Rhode island reds, ten Aracuanas, four Buff Orpingtons, and three silkies). I think that adds up? We have also ordered five Barenvelders and five Welsummers. We have had one batch of chickens before that we raised just up to egg laying and then had to move temporarily and give them away. They are living in a makeshift coop right now and will free range during the day when they are older. There are few predators here, the main one is the mongoose, and they are only a threat to a small chick. We are planning on selling eggs to friends, neighbors, and my friends co op at the local farmers market, so we want a variety of egg colors. Also interested in getting a few egg laying ducks. I am excited to learn and share info about chickens.

Welcome to BYC!!! My wife and I actually ordered Moa Chickens from Kauai(the feral ones all over the place lol). Hope to share with you and learn together!
