Hey y'all, brand new here and brand new to chicken ownership. My boyfriend and I have been discussing chickens for a while and we finally got our first coop. Starting small, with about 4 hens. Looking for poor fliers, good egg layers, and not incredibly fearful chickens. We have a 5 year old german shepherd who is very gentle and trained as a service dog. We are picking up our chickens this week, but still open to any and all advice before we commit. Looks like we might be getting an australorpe, cochins, and maybe ameraucanas. I've done a ton of research but I'd love to talk with y'all and see what else I can learn before we get started.

Hi and welcome to BYC - great to have you onboard. The "breeds" section may help you to decide further, but to be honest, i think that the best way to start is to get as greater variety as possible. That way, you will have experience of what breeds your prefer, and which thrive where you live.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread as members there may be able to provide further advice.

All the best
CT
