Hi all! I've been poking around for a few days, but I have some questions, so I thought I'd finally register and start asking.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, brand new! I actually hesitate asking questions because my questions are SO basic. I don't want anyone to say "Did you do ANY research before asking this question???" Lol!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None, I want to get some this coming year.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I was thinking Plymouth Rock, and Rhode Island Red... I want old varieies, that are good for meat or eggs- I plan on only using them for eggs, but once the egg laying decreases, I could use an extra chicken in my freezer.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I don't remember anymore, but I found them again through a Google search.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm an avid reader, I like to cook, craft (herbs, knitting, sewing, mainly), and I'm 6 months into home ownership for the first time, and starting to implement all those things I've been dreaming about: gardening for self sufficiency (root cellaring, hoop houses), bees, chickens, goats....

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm 28 yo, I've been married for 6.5 years, and I have two girls, age 5 and 6 months. We homeschool. I think chickens will make a good 4H project in a few years. We also have a cat. We live in the middle of the city, but have about a half acre of land, and lots of nature within walking distance.

Never be afraid to ask a question. This forum would die if people quit asking questions. No matter how basic the questionis, I assure you, there are others that need to know that very thing.

Might I suggest you modify your profile to show about where you are. We don't need to be able to find you on Google Maps, but just a general idea can come in handy. We are lucky enough to have people all over the globe on this forum. It is not just your climate where that helps. For example, it does not do a lot of good if I tell somebody they can find something at Tractor Supply if that person lives in Australia. I don't believe Tractor Supply has many shops over there.

From one newbie to another Welcome and everyone is right this sight is very addictive. Just as a heads up, use the search button in the top row to answer alot of your questions, I learned that from a couple people on here. You'll enjoy lookin around here they have the most coop ideas I've seen in one site. Have fun!
