Hello,

We are in San Jose, CA, and are in the process of putting up a small coop. We do not yet have any chicks, but have been doing a lot of reading. We are planning to have 3 or 4 back yard chickens. What is the most commonly recommended breed?

! Great to have you with us! The "most recommended" breed depends a lot on what you intentions are with your chickens? For pets? decoration? eggs? meat? both? Below is handy dandy chart outlining the attributes of a lot of different breeds. Everyone has their favorites - me included!! Good luck in your choices!!

Thanks! That is a great chart.

We plan to make pets of our chickens, and are looking forward to some eggs.
We'd also like chickens that will eat our garden pests.

from New Mexico!

There are so many great breeds out there and as Redsox as said, it does depend on what you are looking for in chickens. I keep Black Australorps. They make great pets and are good around kids as well. Friendly, follow around like drooping puppies and attention seekers.

Good luck with your new chicken adventures and enjoy BYC!
