My first set of chicks would not go into their house at dusk. They would perch nearby and wait for me to put them in and shut the door. I moved them to a larger coop and brought in another set of chicks expecting them to do the same thing. Then it hit me. I bought two cheap battery powered LED lights for inside both houses. At dusk I turn them on and the chickens move right in with no problems. I couldn't believe it. Turn the light off, shut the door, easy.

Thank you for the idea. I have always given the new birds lessons about going into the coop at night, and until the last batch of chicks this method had always worked for me. This last batch didn't figure out how to get into the coop at for at least 4 months. They insisted on sleeping under the coop. It was safe enough for them, but it still had a way of making me crazy about knowing that they weren't in to coop. They have finally figured out the coop, but they sure were stubborn about learning to doing it.

I will have to try the light the next time I need to introduce new chicks.
