These are made to be used in a square pipe (European dumbass idea). I think that they would work in a regular round 3/4" or 1" SCH 40 PVC pipe because then the metering pin/nipple stem would not escape the barrel.
If you can deal with the other problems the stainless steel threads are more durable and cut a better/cleaner thread into plastic and should make for a less problamatic seal.
