Good morning,
I have 5 chickens that I got as day olds. Now one year old. They are free range during the day, happy and healthy. One of the chickens (big bird) started to lay a couple of weeks before the others and then suddenly stopped after about 3 weeks and for months has not laid at all. I thought she might have a secret stash somewhere but have never found any eggs. She is the most spirited of the girls. She seems happy and healthy. She eats well but doesn't seem to lay. I don't mind at all as they are pets but am worried there might be something wrong with her that I am missing? Is there any reason she might not lay when she seems healthy? She isn't stressed as far as I can tell and spends her time with the others and the ducks. She is always the last to go into the coop at night and would choose to stay out if I didn't put her in. Any thoughts?
TIA

They are very sneaky!
Free range birds sometimes need to be 'trained'(or re-trained) to lay in the coop nests, especially new layers. Leaving them locked in the coop/run for a week or so can help 'home' them to lay in the coop nests. Fake eggs/golf balls in the nests can help 'show' them were to lay. They can be confined to coop and maybe run 24/7 for a few days to a week, provided you have adequate space and ventilation, or confine them at least until mid to late afternoon. You help them create a new habit and they will usually stick with it. ..at least for a good while, then repeat as necessary.
