I love love love this sight because I don't feel so silly for being obsessed with chickens. I just started my chicken adventure last summer with a few hens and roosters given to me by a friend. I have no idea what breed they are and am pretty sure they are mixed, but I love them. Since then I have added 9 Rhode Island hens, 3 Americauna chicks, 4 mille de fleur bantams, and 2 black mixed hens. Oh did I mention I am on my second batch of 30 plus Cornish cross meat birds. 44 are off to butcher next week.
All my chicks I bought this spring but I just had 3 hens hatch their own babies and I have 2 more sitting on eggs for a friend. I'm hoping to get her as obsessed as me so I have someone to talk to about chickens. LOL I find myself talking to people about my chickens and they look at me like I'm crazy! I just got off the phone with my butcher and I talked her ear off for about 15 minutes lol!
I have found that everyday is a learning experience and this website has answered soooooo many questions!!
Have a great day everyone!

Come and talk to us, you don't have to feel silly. Not only are you obsessed (your word not mine) but, you are very good at raising meaties - wow that's a lot of chicken

Both batches I have raised I have shared with friends and family so I only have about 10 birds in the freezer. One thing I know for sure is I will NEVER buy chicken from the store again!! They are a really comical birds! I let all of my birds free range literally they are never in the run unless we go out of town. My meaties run after me and the kids hoping for food even though their feeders are full. In both batches I have only had 1 with leg problems, this batch that goes to butcher next week is so healthy and they literally run around the yard. Great entertainment!!!
I know lots of people say to keep them separate from layers but everyone is happy and healthy together my mama hens rule the roost so they usually keep the meaties out of their feeders the baby chicks are very smart and stay out of the way of the big white monsters. 78 chickens, chicks, roos, and broilers all running around our property. My boyfriend says maybe we can slow down on chickens for awhile lol!

Happy you are enjoying BYC!! Sounds like you are getting to be an old hand at meat birds! I thankfully finished processing the last of the 26 Cornish Cross I ordered in April. Glad to have them done and in the freezer! Good luck to you!
