Chicken on nest and aggressive

Welcome !

In the past 2 months or so, I've had 3 hens go broody, and seemed to be aggressive while on the nest. Got the heck pecked out of me a couple of times, then I tried using a stick to pry them out for fear of more pecking. This was a mistake, as I was in there poking them around, aggravating them to the point of violence.

Then, as I learned from @DobieLover, a broody hen is in sort of a "broody trance," and if approached quietly, and grabbed quickly, and smoothly, one can pick up and move said hen with little chance of getting pecked.

This had made a huge difference, and instead of lollygagging around, doing other chores in the coop first, I just go in and grab her immediately, before she "wakes up," from the trance.

I haven't been pecked since, and the hens are moved with great ease, before they realize what has happened. If done properly, the broody will flatten out like a pancake when set down, and must then be poked, or prodded to break the "trance."

I have only had chickens for about 2 years, and have never dealt with broodies until recently, so I have little experience, but this has worked wonders for me. Your mileage may vary. :)
