I went to a workshop on how to raise backyard chickens and the local chicken breeder/speaker said that Avain flu is in the environment but it will be more common in professional hatcheries. However, the speaker goes on to say that people who raise chickens will catch little strains of the Avian flu and that is one of the advantages of having a backyard flock is to build up an immunity to the strain.
All I can say is hmm...I had the flu two weeks after adopting my chicks and I was told that there are no known cases of it in the U.S. But if what the speaker said is true then I could have contracted the flu from my birds. I guess that's what I get for kissing my chickies goodnight!~
Is this true that chicken owners will build up immunity to Avian flu?
