I have 6 Black Australorp hens about 21 weeks old. They have 4x6 coop w/rollaway egg nestbox attached to side and 12x8 run. And sometimes let them free roam for a hour. I got a light that come on in the coop at 6 am. Current sunset is 7:30. Feed is Purina Organic Layer Crumble with the Oyster Strong. I also give mealworms and wood sorrel / oxalis when I weed.

So far I been only getting 1 or 2 eggs a day, usually 1, sometimes none. Started laying on Sept 11th. Sometimes they use the egg box sometimes the coop still.

Today I came home and peeked in and seen one laying in the nest box. A short bit later I checked and she was in the coop not the box. No egg. Then I seen something hanging from her behind. Then she released it. It appeared to be a soggy egg shell which she tried to eat right away. No other indication of egg, just a wet elongated mass that appears to be a shell squashed together.

What causes them to lay just a shell like this?

Hi there, welcome to BYC.

As CluckerFamily mentioned, young-laying birds tend to lay deformed/soft-shelled eggs for the first few weeks of them laying. After some time, she should be able to get her system figured out and should start producing normal eggs, but if she doesn't you may start administering her a calcium supplement, like Tums, calcium citrate, or calcium gluconate to see if that helps.
