Chicken pecking at food, but missing????

We have a completely blind (perhaps he can see shadows) old ex-rooster and he does this when he thinks he's found some food.
It took us a little while to find a solution that worked but now we put him and his food (rice / cracked corn) on a large plastic tray.
As he moves about and gets onto the tray he can hear his feet clicking on the plastic and he knows it's time to start pecking and he seems to manage, relatively, OK.
He can find the tray by himself when I pour the food on to it, so his hearing has not been damaged.

He is currently looking after some orphaned chicks, we didn't think he knew they were there initially but now he calls them over to his tray of food (of course they have been on the tray since the food went down but he doesn't know that).

I know that this thread hasn't been used for a while (14 years!) but I am having a similar problem with a week old-ish quail that doesn't seem to be as big as the others. They have not be injured in any way so i was wondering what else could cause this?
