I broke down today and built a sifter for sand/chicken poop.

About 18 X 18

I live in Florida where the sand is fine so I went with 1/8 wire mesh

Some scrap wood... I guess 2 X 4 would work but remember weight.

I screwed the boards together, this was secured even more by stapling wire mesh to all 4 sides underneath and adding 4 strips of wood along the bottom so that the weight of the sand and all would support it even more.

Pretty simple and turned out great. Very fast, with a few shakes the sand fell through and the sifter was ready for more sand by the time my GF had another shovel full.

Use an N95 mask when sifting sand. I wear mine everyday into the coop to sift my sand with a kitty litter scoop after raking it with a plastic rake. Sand is very bad to get in your lungs.

Yes, Florida sand is fine for sifting. I use a household screen. I have a 8x10 coop. I do this once a week. Definitely wear a mask. Seems as though in this process I ended up with dry dust and very fine sand. My hens love to feather dust everyday. I feel that keeping the poop out so I don't have to worry about touching them. I do eventually add new sand once a month. lol! They do get upset because there is nothing to scratch for.
