Hi everyone, new user here and first post!

One of our 5 month old birds seems to be plucking out her own feathers on her back. She is our only Cochin in a small flock. She's definitely not the "alpha" chicken and she does get picked on from time to time, but we've seen her pecking her own back, and for the most part her skin is not very injured, so it appears to be self inflicted.

Her skin looks largely healthy to us, except for the areas where she's recently removed a lot of feathers. Those spots sometimes get raw but usually scab over and heal quickly. As you can see she's gotten a couple sprays of BluKote just to keep those areas disinfected. We suspect mites and she's gotten a few baths in diatomaceous earth, but that does not seem to be solving this problem.

Can anyone help us diagnose and treat? Thanks!

Welcome to BYC! Diatomaceous earth will not kill mites. Get permethrin powder if you see mites.
But if not mites, I would think more likely others are pulling out her feathers....Also it isn't unheard of for youngsters to molt.
