I think the higher the better, and safer. My older hens all sleep on the highest roosts with our roo in the middle. The subordinate or less desirable hens sleep on the bottom. Some of the youngest ones even sleep in our porch because they don't want to be in the coop on the bottom roosts.

With a previous flock, it was my experience they preferred the higher roosts. In my current set up the roosts are the same height and there is still some shuffling around for whatever they consider the "best" spot.

I just believe "Bloom where you are planted!" I'm too short to reach a high roost( chair, whatever). But once I pick a spot I will not be driven away!!
