Can I put chicken poop directly on asparagus plants?
Old timers tell me that asparagus loves nitrogen and can't really get too much nitrogen. So they said to put the poop right in the asparagus bed, the more the better...
I'd always compost it first, less chance of contamination of your hard earned produce, adding fresh manure to edible garden produce is like playing Russian roulette, you can get away with it for quite some time but the one time you don't wouldn't be worth it IMO
Applied in the fall gives it plenty of time to compost in place with the nutrients leaching down to the roots. It also allows the pathogens time to die off.
In the case of asparagus, or strawberries... Can you apply fresh chick manure after the harvest season is finished in early summer? Is it necessary to compost the manure first and apply that to the plants later?
The advised time from applying the manure is six months before picking to allow things like UVs to have the tie to kill the germs off. Composting in place (where the plant are) is acceptable if you use the six months rule. So putting it on fresh after the harvest is done should give it plenty of time.
