My boyfriend's parents were visiting from West Virginia, we're in New Jersey, and his father is an avid gardener. He asked about the feasibility of composting chicken poop to be transported by to West Virginia. So, of course, that got me thinking. What's the best way to compost chicken poop in a way that it can be transported?

I'm sure there are some rules regarding transporting poop across state lines, so I'll look in to that, but I was curious!

Thank you.

We have two rotating barrels we put compost materials in and chicken poop. It takes a few months to become a nice compost. Other stuff is drier lint, dead leaves, sawdust, grass clippings, kitchen waste, coffee grounds/filter, and egg shells.

The key is to compost the chicken manure first...any standard compost approach will work - a pile, a pallet bin, a spinning bin.

Once it's broken down and composted, it won't smell strongly, making transport much more pleasant. Not sure how much compost you'll have, but 5-gallon buckets with lids feels like the best way to store finished compost and transport it (lids will help avoid any spills during transport).
