Chicken Popularity

Is it just me, or have chickens become the newest craze? It seems like there are so many new people starting to keep chickens now than I ever remember. Why all of the recent popularity?

It sure does seem like it. A lot has to be the whole organic know where you food comes from movement, think that is the number one reason. Think a lot is also that people are finding out they are actually quite good pets and when you have one person in the neighborhood or family with them other people become interested. Also because so many chickens are free or cheap ($2 at the feed store), people tend to get them on impulse and find out that they like them, and they really aren't that hard to give away if they decide they don't want them. They also don't tend to bite or scratch like dogs or cats, if you don't count the roosters.

There are more and more people in towns and cities keeping chickens now also. I hope this isn't a new fad and we don't end up with a ton of unwanted birds in a couple of years. I would love for this to be a true change in the mindset of people and it would encourage more people to start growing gardens again rather than relying on fast food
